You take a scrambled Rubik's Cube and solve it as fast as you can — against a timer, in front of a judge, on a scramble generated by computer so everyone gets the same puzzle. It's not just the 3×3 either: the World Cube Association recognises 17 official events, from 2×2 up to 7×7, one-handed and blindfolded included. Anyone can enter, and every result goes into the WCA's worldwide database.
Every Australian record, kept current with the WCA database — from seasoned veterans to first-time record holders.
There's no qualifying time and no age limit. Plenty of people come to their first competition solving in a couple of minutes — and plenty come just to watch.
